About
Web Applications are custom built tools to help businesses in the areas of; organization, tracking, databasing, managing,
and much more. There is really no limit on the uses for a custom built application, but don't be afraid of the word "custom", which would normally imply "expensive". This simply means that it is custom built to work for the exact purpose you intend, however is a fraction of the cost of implementing a large multi-functiional "computer system" which will host a sea of options, most of which you will never use.
These systems have costs ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars for small to medium sized businesses that would just like some organization or functions to help nake information accessible anywhere by whomever they want.
To better explain how one of these applications works, we will go through the example to your right, and explain how and why this particular app was designed.
Eg. Shipping Module
This distribution company wanted to track all outgoing shipments, and for that information to be accessible by Customer Service, Reps and potentially, even Customers.
- (Top right image) The Administration Page is the menu where you would choose which application you want to access. This particular company will have more than one. So they will choose "Shipping Module" for our example. Which would take us to our next screen shot.
- (Middle Right Image) The actual Shipping Module is where they can search for the customer they are shipping to simply by entering their customer number. This is designed to be as simple as possible and in this case, all can be done through this one page. For example, if the customer hasn't yet been entered into their database, then they can be easily added by clicking "Add Customer". Other options are, "Update Customer" and "Add Carrier". The shipment details are then entered and you're ready to go onto the next shipment. Multiple search criterias are also on this page, so that the Shipping Department can easily recall any statistics or info they need. Which takes us to the next page.
- (Bottom Right Image) Depending on the search made, this is a list of the results with all the relevant information. This example also shows stats for number of pieces and skids shipped that day.
- Easy Access to information, using current technology. This company also has a number of reps on the road, that need as much information as can get to them. If they're standing in a customer's store and they need to know if and when their order has been shipped out, the rep:
(Old Way), would first have to "get back to them". Then that rep would have to call head office, talk to Customer Service and ask for the details of, if and when this order has shipped. Then Customer Service would have to "get back to the rep". Customer Service would then call shipping and ask if or when this order shipped, and shipping would look it up or "get back to them".
(NEW Way), can simply use his/her blackberry  to look up the customer and see if or when the customer's order has been shipped out.
A seperate "mini" application was built, for access by a BlackBerry™ so that the information is now accessible by anyone they require, no matter where. Seeing as this application is web based, it's accessible by anyone with internet access, but can be restricted by use of a password login system.
